I Heart NYC.

I let New York slip by without getting any spectacular shots. Seems a little tragic now, because that city is a photographer's dream. Everything is interesting. So I can't explain why it felt like a chore to take out my camera.

As DD would say, we were "tourists on crack". I've always wanted to get on one of these.

So we paid the $40, and got the cliff notes version of the city. It took us everywhere from Central Park, to China Town, to Times Square. We looked like the bus dorks, but it was a great way to navigate through the city.

Told you we'd find a Statue of Liberty hat... :0)

Even though this is as close as we got to the Statue of Liberty.

Even saw people filming something!

We did NOT get raped and killed in this staircase. And the risk was totally worth the handbags we found!  :)

There was really no limit to the cheesy tourist activities. I really don't know what possessed us, but DD and I had our portraits drawn together...like junior high lovers at a harvest fair. And let me tell you that as soon as I sat down I regretted it. The only thing worse than having someone staring at your facial features intently for five minutes, is having a CROWD stare at your facial features for five minutes. I'm totally canceling that appointment I have at the college to be a nude model for the art students. haha!

We tried to go to the Museum of Modern Art, but it was closed on Tuesdays. So we ended up going to the Jewish museum, which was amazing. The tour guide had to be over 60 years old, and had been working there over 15 years. But her enthusiasm for all paintings and the artists was contagious. She made you want to live your life more passionately.

After that, we found this little cafe called Square Meal. It was so cute. And of course I have no pictures of it. NOR do I have any pictures of Marissa Tomei who was sitting one table over from us! Yep! We even had a celebrity sighting...well DD recognized her. I would have never, except her voice is unmistakeable. There was so much more...shopping, and great restaurants. I can't wait to go back and experience more than the touristy stuff.

OH, and on the way home I started reading The Glass Castle and have nearly read it through. It was originally recommended to me by my friend Michelle (hi!), but I was reluctant to get it because I already knew the story. So I started telling DD about it in the bookstore and she swooped it up. When we got back to the hotel, she read the first page out loud, which said  "To John, for convincing me that everyone who is interesting has a past". Well, I knew I had to get it and have not been able to put it down. I know half the world has read it, but if you haven't YOU MUST GO ON AMAZON RIGHT THIS SECOND AND ORDER IT. You will read it from cover to cover, I promise. It's a true story, and it is completely mesmerizing.

Okay, back to work, and see you again soon!

Love your blog...it often makes me smile. Great pics of NY. I went not too long ago and loved the bus tour. What a great way to see the city. We did one with the kids this summer in Chicago...another great city. I especially love the picture of you in the stairwell of the purse vendors; what an experience. I did it and every time I got a little nervous I would turn a corner and there would be a grandma pushing a stroller while shopping for person. Quite an adventure. I did get a little nervous when I was lead down to a basement with a trap door...but the butter yellow prada was worth it!! My husband would be mortified if he knew where I blindly went for a purse...who knows where I would go for shoes!!

"... canceling that appointment I have at the college to be a nude model for the art students" is my favorite line!

I love your life and I'm hopping onto amazon.com to order that book. Never heard of it... know nothing about it... but the first line is a grabber. I must be "interesting".

Welcome home. I've missed your voice.

I miss this city so much. Thanks for giving us a piece of it. And man I have always wanted to eat at Rice to Riches! I've heard about it and it seems like a carb-lover's dream!

The last time I was in NYC, I "discovered" Rice to Riches and it is AWESOME! I'm so glad there's someone else out there who couldn't resist the lure of oddly flavored rice pudding!

Looks like you had SO much fun. I need to get back there someday!
Glass Castle is SUCH a great book. I picked it for a book club I am in last year and everyone loved it...I think it is the favorite book of the club.

Welcome back!

I think Miss Maile needs to be a tour guide--whenever you post pictures from your trips, it's all I can do to restrain myself from packing my bags and calling my travel agent. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you...

PS: The Glass Castle is one of my favorite books, too!

Hi, so delighted that your posts are quick and contain so much fun. Since my gal, DD runs too fast to make entries, I can keep up with her via your blog. Love it! If I didn't have to fly, I'd love to go back to NYC and really dig in and go adventuring and even ride that weird english copy cat bus! I've missed this book, but wondering if you've read Elizabeth Gilbert's eat, pray, love? It was a fun journey.

Thanks again for the peek into another lifestyle.

Ummmm, you were in NYC??? You know that I am only four hours from there. FOUR! NO, I haven't been, but I would have gone to see you! HMPH!

I absolutely love your blog! I am an avid book reader, so I took your recommendation on The Glass Castle, started it last nite and finally closed it 50 pages later! And the only reason I stopped at 50 is because I had my significant other lying next to me with an eyemask on trying to sleep! lol I had never heard of the book, but even the gal at the library confirmed it would be a good one. Thanks for sharing!
