Firefly Countdown

firefly%20copy.jpg

It hit me today that it's only ten days until we see Jason's family in Kentucky. His mom is turning the visit into a whole big reunion, complete with a luau, and I CAN'T wait. I love his family. And his mom doesn't even own a computer, so I'm not saying it to suck up. :0) ...I truly did luck out in the mother-in-law department. Beyond that, I just love that the kids get to experience TRUE country living every once in a while. ESPECIALLY THE FIREFLIES. Call me sheltered, but the first time I experienced them was 4 years ago. Ever since I have been OBSESSED. Like I'm not sure I can die happy unless I live around them at least once in my lifetime. And if I did, I swear on my life I would never take them for granted. I would sit on my porch every chance I got, until each and every little last burst of fairy light in the dusky sky burned out. I'm not kidding. I simply adore them. And my stomach leaps with joy at the idea that I get to visit them soon. Today starts the countdown.

If you live with fireflies, please go out and sit with them tonight. And then think about how really lucky you are.

When I was growing up in MI in the 70's we would use empty butter containers to catch fireflies. Of course we put a slit in the lid so they could breathe. We had hours and hours of fun chasing and catching fireflies. Can I go to KY too?!

We're at Grandmas house in Chicago this week, and when Zachary's not fishing on the river (almost every waking moment) he's cathing the fire flies. The first night he saw them he spent about an hour working at it. I do miss that in SA.

I love fireflies too........it's just so magical and fun! (I live in Ohio) But I had a funny thing happen the other night. I woke up, the house was dark. I came out into the living room and saw a light blinking on the floor. I thought it was a cell phone lying on the rug....I reached down to pick it up but there was nothing there! It was creepy. I turned on the light. It was a firefly trapped in my house! I let him/her out. Before all this technology stuff I would have known right away it was a firefly.

Fireflies are very cool. We have them here - IN THE CITY - but, they all hang out at this park and it you walk through the winding TOTALLY ENCHANCTED forest path they will light up all around you. Pretty cool. I grew up with fireflies and they really never lose their coolness. Never ever.

I have never seen fireflies and I think I'll have to put it on my list of 'things to do before I die' along with seeing the Aurora Borealis. We have MUCH less glamorous insects here in Australia. Bogong Moths, mosquitoes, flies!!!! But we do have wonderful birds and koalas in trees across the road from time to time. By the way, where is SA tz and MI Susan?
